The Montreal Freeschool is a grassroots initiative of individuals acting collectively to create educational opportunities for children and adults outside of the institutional environment of formal schooling. We are a not for profit group, working with the support of MUCS (Montreal Urban Community Sustainment) to construct a network in which skills, information and knowledge are shared via classes and workshops without the hierarchy or costs associated with other paths to learning. We invite everyone to participate and welcome all people regardless of age, race, orientation or physical or mental ability. On December 13th, 2007 we had our first visioning meeting for the Montreal Free School. We had an evening filled with inspiration and a series of fertile discussions with the 30 people in attendance.
People of all ages from all over the city and outlying areas attended, with a diversity of interests and experiences. Among the attendants we had radical un-schoolers, homeschooling parents and kids. We had people with experiences with other free schools, including the Tatamagouche Summer Free School in Nova Scotia, and the Free School in Albany New York. There were also representatives from the University of the Streets Cafe, and the Centre Social Auto-Gérer.

What are we doing now?
We’ve decided to jump right ahead and organize a three-month experimental semester of the free school, starting in March. After this three-month period we will take some time to review and learn from our experiences before planning another semester. For this three month period, the Free School will be based in the MUCS project, although free school activities may take place anywhere!
